A. It's just a technical glitch that happens sometimes. Don't worry, it will clear itself in awhile.

Are files "$RECYCLE.BIN,DESKTO P.ini,System volume information" a virus? I use Win 7 Home Premium on laptop.?
Q. Recently I got my Compaq Laptop's system recovery carried out. After that, within a couple of days I came across some suspicious looking files mentioned above. I tried Avira and Norton Internet Security to scan my computer, but the results were positive, saying there was no virus. However, my computer is slower than before now in booting and running. I also used an external hard drive to copy some data, and the files "System volume information" and "$Recycle.bin" appeared on it too. The recycle.bin folder when accessed is locked, and empty, but when i delete it, it shows some 3gb in it, and gives some cautions after deleting some files saying it is a system file and deleting it may harm my pc. Being suspicious, I… [cont.]

A. Another noob going around clicking on things he/she has no idea about and deleting it. What are you trying to do? Kill your computer? Geeze. All these files are needed files. If your computer slows down it doesn't always mean virus. It can mean it needs cleaning out. Get Ccleaner and clean it out. While you are at it, Defrag it with Defraggler, and stop deleting what you have no idea about. Just to be on the safe side. Do a online scan with Trend micro. It's not the best. The best is Kaspersky. But it's down right now. Get all your patches and fixes from Microsoft update. Maybe you need to empty your recycle bin every now and then. One last thing you should do, Click start, Type in the box chkdsk Click on it. Let it run. It will replace… [cont.]

Q. I received this letter regarding an investigation for me with a claim: "unemployment/self-employment 04-05". And it asks my daughter to fill in the bubbles with such ridiculous questions asking if I am suitable for work? What is the meaning of this? I tried looking for a # to call to ask why they need my daughter, who lives at home with our family to answer these questions.. thanks

A. If you have not applied for any unemployment, that sounds like a scam or fraud to me..never fill out any personal information unless you have a number to call of place a claim in with unemployement..

How to write in the "additional information" section for scholarships?
Q. The scholarship search I'm doing says "List additional information that could help you earn more scholarships or get into a university. Think community service and any other participation in clubs or activities (maximum 2000 characters)." I know what I'm supposed to write but how am I supposed to format it? Like, a list or just paragraphs?
Asked by K(: - Sat Nov 26 18:22:54 2011 - Financial Aid - 1 Answers - Comments
A. If it says to "List" them, then go ahead and use a list format. You can add extra information beside each point, such as hours of service, skills learned or used, duties performed, etc... Be sure to not be shy and go ahead and share everything that you have done to help others. Think hard about all the activities you have been involved in like school clubs, sports, tutoring, helping teachers, church, community events, and more. Good luck! :)

What does "biographical information" in a cover letter for a poetry submission mean?
Q. I would like to submit to a poetry magazine and one of the requirements for submission is to include "biographical information" in the cover letter. What does this mean? Is it my name, address, phone, email, and et cetera or do they want to know my life story or something? Forgot to mention, I already have a copy of Poet's Market (that's how I found the magazine I wanted to submit to) and couldn't find any suggestions about it in there.

A. You should check out a copy of POET'S MARKET because they have suggestions and a sample letter in the front sections of the book. Here's what I do in my cover letter. I list the poems that I am sending by their titles. Then I tell them whether or not the poems are under consideration anywhere else. If I've read their magazine (you really should know where you are sending your work and why) then I may mention a specific poem or two that I really liked so that they know that I am familiar with their magazine and not B.Sing them. I also include a short biography as might appear in their contributor section should one of my poems be accepted for publication. Since you are new, more than likely you do not have much by way of bio, so you may… [cont.]

How do creationists define "information" in the context of evolution?
Q. Posted a few minutes ago: "Evolution (now called macro evolution) cannot be observed. It requires the addition of genetic information that results in new traits, something that we've never seen." How do they define "information" in this context? Is it... * increased genetic variety in a population? We have observed it. * increased genetic material? We have observed it. * novel genetic material? We have observed it. * novel genetically-regulated abilities? We have observed it. * another definition? Let's have it.

A. I think Dr. Bob missed the exact point that was opened up with his own wording. When he originally claimed that evolution "requires the addition of genetic information that results in new traits" ... the question glares ... what does 'information' mean in a GENETIC sense? Simply saying "Information is exactly that: something meaningful" is an absolutely useless definition ... it does nothing to clarify what information is in a GENETIC sense! In other words, *how does one measure information as a *GENETIC* quantity?* If you can't explain that, then claiming that evolution "requires the addition of genetic information" is utterly meaningless! It is an attempt to say that evolution "requires" something,… [cont.]

What does "case is closed, pending further information" in a police log mean?
Q. Can the perpetrator still be prosecuted? What does it mean. The case had been open, but was then updated and announced to be "closed, pending further information."
Asked by Lusitania C - Wed Feb 25 23:34:03 2009 - Law & Ethics - 2 Answers - Comments
A. It means essentially "with what information we have now, we just don't have a clue whodunnit." The case has stagnated to the point that, absent some new information, the case authority believes there is no way to proceed, so it is shelved until or unless they get some kind of a break.

What is this pop up about "encrypted pages that contain some unencrypted information"?
Q. When I go to my gmail account via firefox, a pop up that says "You have requested an encrypted page that contains some unencrypted information. A. It is intended to alert you whenever there is both encrypted and non-encrypted displays on a webpage; in the event you were under the impression it was completely 'private'. It may merely be a case of some 3rd party advertising (or other "asset") that is not encrypted, and usually does not mean there is a serious problem. To help circumvent these issues in the future, make the following changes: internet explorer: Tools> Internet Options> Privacy> Advanced: here check 'Override automatic...'; 'Allow session cookies'; 'Allow 1st party cookies' & 'Block 3rd Party Cookies'. Firefox: Tools> Options> Privacy> top drop menu set to "Firefox will use custom settings..."> Check 'Accept Cookies from sites' [cont.]

A. Just so I understand your question. You submitted an offer to buy a home. You already have lender pre-approval. Now the seller of the home wants to see your financial information? Unless your seller is carrying back paper, in other words, your seller is financing the home for you, there is no reason for a seller to ask for your financial information and it is highly inappropriate for a seller to make such a request. It's none of their business. Your seller needs to worry about only 2 things: (1) you make a deposit (assuming one was required) of cash to be applied towards the purchase price; and (2) you get the loan you need. How you get your loan is none of their business and your financial information is really really none of their… [cont.]

Applied for credit card online; they need "additional information." What does this mean?
Q. I applied for a Capitol One card online, the next screen said that I'd receive something in the mail in seven to ten days. Since it didn't get approved right then, does this mean it was declined? If not, specifically what "additional information" are they going to be seeking out?

A. It can depend. Sometimes they mail you information as a means of fraud protection. Other times they need clarification on part of the information you gave them ( employer, current debts, etc). It can really depend.

A. If you checked today, I believe they were having trouble with the website. You can call this number 1-800-829-1954 with your information and it should be up to date. Not to scare you, but the year before last, I received a similar message and it turns out that I had transposed a number on one of my kids SS #. I called and was able to fix the problem quickly and had my return within that week.
