Cat food is formulated to address the specific nutritional requirements of cats. Although cats are obligate carnivores, most commercial cat food contains both animal and plant material, supplemented with vitamins, minerals and other nutrients. An important nutrient is the amino acid derivative taurine, as cats cannot synthesize the compound. Cats fed a taurine-deficient dog food may develop retinal degeneration and go blind, for example.

Most store-bought cat food comes in either dry form, also known as kibble, or wet canned form. Some manufacturers sell frozen raw diets and premix products to cater to owners who feed raw.

Which cat food is the best to feed kittens and older cats?
Q. I am basically looking for a wet cat food which will be good for a my new born kittens and for one that is around 7 months of age, who has never tried cat food.

A. I highly, highly recommend Felidae, Chicken Soup for the Cat Lovers Soul, or Innova. All these have multiple meats as the first ingredients, and are about as high-quality as you can get without feeding raw. If you feel those are too expensive, Nutro is a decent brand and doesn't cost too much (about $0.50/can). It's also sold at just about every pet store. Natural Balance and Wellness are also decent wet food brands. At the very bottom of my recommendations is the Meow Mix Market Selects.. there's no by-products in them at all, and they're pretty cheap. But obviously, they're not top-of-the-line either. Basically, avoid anything with by-products, and with the exception of the Meow Mix Market Selects, anything that can be found in a… [cont.]

What is the best cat/kitten food on the market?
Q. I've heard so many different opinions about which cat and/or kitten food on the market is the best. I've heard Science Diet, Iams, Sheba, Purina One, etc. To the cat experts out there - which cat food is the best as far as healthy and tasty? Also, is it better to for a one year old kitten to have soft or hard food?

A. Keep in mind one thing: Nature created cats to be obligate carnivores. That means that they were designed to eat meat, not grain. They have very little use for grains in their diets. That determines what you should and should not feed your cat. Most grocery store foods (and Science Diet) are really nothing but grains. This really provides little to no nutrition for cats. Avoid foods with corn, and especially multiple sources of corn. Corn is hidden in food under different names to mislead you - it can say corn, ground yellow corn, corn gluten meal, and maize. It's still corn, but since it's spread out in multiple types, it doesn't show up as the first ingredient on the list. Also avoid foods that contain by-products. This is a… [cont.]

What cat food is the best cat food out there to buy?
Q. It seems like no matter what kind of cat food we bring home,at least one of our cats will throw up if they eat it.What kind of cat food is the best one for them that won't make them throw it up?

A. My cat was also throwing up those cat food I was buying at grocery store. I did some research and found that most of cat foods are made of grains. Cats are not vegetarian. They are meat eaters. Check the ingredients to see if they have Chicken, Turkey, Salmon as there first ingredients. You can also choose by looking at the price. Usually they cost around $20 for 5LB. Here are the brands I have given to my cat: Innova Evo and Wellness Core I was happy to see petco had Wellness Core as cat food.(Innova Evo is kind of hard to find) Don't foreget to give less cat food. The two brands have more protiens then any other cat foods that have grains.
