A. you can, but you need to be aware of a few things. first of all, used satellite receivers often have "balances" attached to them, meaning that the former user didn't pay everything that they owed. if the receiver is to be used again, even though it's on another person's account, the balance still needs to be paid. i would contact the seller on ebay and make sure that there is no balance. you can also get the receiver ID# and card ID# from the seller and contact DirecTV to find out about the balance yourself. if they say that there's no balance, then you're good to go. second, unfortunately directv WILL charge you an extra $5 a month for having a second receiver on your account. most people mistakenly believe that this is a "monthly… [cont.]

A. If you are asking what you should look for when purchasing these products, then I can only help you out with a few of your items. When buying root crops/vegetables: When buying potatoes--buy ones that do not have eyes/shoots already blooming. Smell them, look for bad places, they should be firm not squishy at all. Other vegetables, look for brightness/crispness in color. Smell, if it smells bad or odd--don't purchase. If you are buying your vegetables by the pound, do not let them charge you for waste. Demand that useless leaves and rotten sections be removed before being weighed. With green vegetables such as celery, brussel sprouts, lettuce, etc.---REMEMBER the darker the color of green the more bitter the vegetable will be. … [cont.]

Is buying items other than animals at pet shops contributing to kitten/puppy mills and pet overpopulation?
Q. Is buying kitty litter or rabbit food from petco or petsmart or other places also bad as buying a real cat or dog from a pet store, which gets animals from puppy/kitty mills? I don't want to support pet stores and mills, so which are good places to shop for pet items that doesn't support puppy mills and kitty mills? Also, why can't pet stores sell or promote animals from shelters/rescues rather than puppy mills? That way, they can do checks, adoption papers, screening, etc to avoid pet overpopulation?

A. i do not buy items from stores that sell puppies, kittens, or rabbits. here in maine we have pet quarters which is an awesome store with a knowledgeable staff & they do not sell any of the above. beyond that i work to make sure everyone knows about the mills & the terrible heartbreak that can come from buying an animal from a pet shop. buy from a reputable breeder! if you must have a breed. i firmly believe that the best pets are mixed breeds & there are too many animals put to death in shelters to justify purchasing a pet. there are lots of pure breds available in shelters...

Any ideas on buying an airline ticket without the internet?
Q. I am buying an airline ticket for my fiance's best friend to come and visit him for his birthday (he's in Maine, we are in North Carolina). I can not buy it online because my fiance will see the purchase on the account and it's a surprise. I know that if I go to the ticket counter at the airport tickets are usually more expensive than they are online. Do you think that if I print out the page that has the price of the ticket I want they will sell it to me for that price? Or do you have any other ideas on how to get an online price without buying it online?
Asked by meggybucks1 - Wed Apr 4 10:55:34 2007 - - 7 Answers - 0 Comments

A. Call Travelocity, Orbitz, etc using their toll-free phone numbers (1-888-872-8356 and 1-888-656-4546 respectively). You can order your tickets over the phone and get the same deals that you'd find online. They'll tell you what flights are available and you can put it on a credit card or possibly even authorize a draft from a checking account. With heightened security, you'll probably need your fiance's friend's SSN to schedule their seat on a flight on their behalf. Good luck, it sounds like a fun surprise!

My husband and I are considering buying a 5th wheel to live in?
Q. We are moving back to Indiana in Oct and our home is under contract to be bought by our daughter so we are moving in with my parents until we find a place. We have been toying with the idea of buying a 5th wheel, used, at a cost of around $55,000 and also buying a used truck to pull it. We have done the research and my husband knows which type of truck we need. the money is not a problem, we can get the best, we have been looking and we have found some very nice higher end 5th wheels that we feel we could be very comfortable in. We can either park it at my parents house and whenever they leave town ( they are retired) we can stay in the house...OR we have an acre next to the house that our daughter is buying and we can put in a pad there… [cont.]

We travel for work racetrack (horses) tried the apartment thing and houses for years would not go back to that either, this is more cost efficient and time efficient for us, always set and ready to go, not a lot of packing and unpacking or searching for apartments in whatever kind of area or price . A. Avoid last minute shopping! There will definitely be things that you forget about buying at the end and will have to get. Also, if you procrastinate it will make moving even more stressful. If you give yourself time to look you can also compare and find better deals. My number one suggestion is by a memory foam for your bed. I didn't think about it freshman year and my poor back suffered. Good Luck!

A. There are down payments and fees involved when buying any home. You may need a loan specifically for manufactured homes if you are not buying it out right. Work with a realtor if at all possible, if not... make sure you get things like a sellers disclosure since those seem to be left out when buying from an owner and when the buyer doesn't have much knowledge about buying homes.

Asked by Robert R - Sat Feb 9 16:14:58 2008 - - 2 Answers - 3 Comments

A. Craigslist doesn't get involved at all. It's just like putting an ad in the newspaper. You contact the seller, and make what ever arrangements you want. I would be really careful dealing with someone out of town. There's no way to know whether they will actually send you the item. Buy from someone local, and pick the thing up yourself. Take someone with you, in case the person is really a pervert or murderer.

Buying airline tickets - is advance purchase always a good deal?
Q. I'm planning to take my vacation on October 2008 from Dubai to Cebu (Phillippines) via Singapore Airlines. Would I get a better price if I buy the ticket now or would it be the same if I buy it sometime in September? I already spoke to an airline rep and of course she won't confirm if the rates will change or not. But my question is, in general, is it always a good idea to buy tickets months in advance compared to buying them a month or two weeks from date of flight?

Asked by NetRambler - Fri Apr 18 20:00:12 2008 - - 5 Answers - 0 Comments

A. People are likely afraid that house prices will still keep falling. Considering the price of the average home, it can be frightening to buy. No one wants to spend $250,000 say on something that tomorrow will be worth $225,000. The problem is that it is completely impossible to time the market. I.e., you can never buy at the absolute low nor sell at the absolute high. Yet people always try. Smart investors know that if they think that the prospects for an investment are good long-term, then you buy that investment when everyone else thinks it is not a good investment. You go against the grain. It's scary to do that though. If you are looking at a house today and it's say $300,000 you might say that is a good price. You… [cont.]

How do I find out whether asking price is fair for a particular house, etc? What steps should I take before buying?

A. Do yourself a favor and rent for awhile or stay on base. Prices are going down so fast that you will probably loose your down payment in no time. Wait until the prices start going back up and the buy. By that time you should know the neighberhood better and know where to buy. Not trust real estate agents, they just want your money. You can do your research online. Just do a google search on real estate jacksonville. Zillow.com is a good site.

How much do you invest per go when buying shares?
Q. I am using Halifax sharebuilder at the moment and have been buying in chunks of about 70- 80 but I will now be be buying in amounts of about 150- 200. It only costs 1.50 a time so my costs are about 1% for buying. When selling however it costs 5!! So this means I need to sell to the value of hundreds if not thousands to make it worth while. Do you buy in hundreds or thousands?
Asked by yu_yu_liang - Wed Sep 5 06:51:55 2007 - - 3 Answers - 0 Comments

A. You're paying 1% to buy and 3% to sell, around 4% in total. That can be a big chunk of your profit. If cash is getting 8% p.a. right now and your equity portfolio is returning 20% p.a. then you are doing all this work and taking all this risk for an incremental 12%. So you don't want to lose a third of it to transaction costs. The amount of money you should spend per transaction depends entirely on your means and your investment strategy. Personally I'd always invest around 10% of my total pot in each transaction but then again, I'm no speculator. I prefer to buy quality stocks and then hold on to them.

A. You clearly need to learn menu planning. Since you've never done this before, I'd start with a one week plan for breakfast, lunch and dinner. Get what you need to make those meals and nothing else. If you can stick with this for a couple of weeks, you'll start to think creatively about food. For example, If you ate steak on Monday and had a half steak left over, you can slice that leftover steak thin, freeze the meat and there's your meat for next week's taco night or chili night. Sounds like you guys do a lot of impulse buying. Take a list. Get everything on it and nothing else. Again if you try the menu planning method within a few weeks, you'll find yourself becoming a smarter shoppers. You'll start taking advantage of … [cont.]

What do you think about buying a brand new car?
Q. I have a 2000 Acura Integra that is in pretty good condition, low miles, etc... My parents bought it for me for graduation, so it is already paid for, but I would really like a brand new car. Do you think it is worth it to make a payment every month, along with rent? I want an Altima coupe. Also, how much would be a good down payment if I do decide to get the Altima? Any other tips on buying a new car?
Asked by JewelryHeart - Fri Sep 5 12:04:07 2008 - - 5 Answers - 0 Comments

A. Stick with the car you have. It's in good shape and low miles and it's paid for!!! What more could you ask for? Buying a brand new car these days is not worth it unless you're rich. The value goes down thousands as soon as you drive it off the lot. I wish I new you so I could convince you to stick with what you've got. The car payment and insurance will be higher and you already have rent so why not save the money, keep your car and have that extra 2-300.00 dollars or more per month to do whatever you want with? The economy today has to be played right... Stick with what you've got.

Is it a bad idea to get CMHC mortgage insurance when buying a house?
Q. My friend is planning to buy a house in Ontario. He's pretty young, in his 20s and he might buy another house when he starts a family. He asked me if its a bad idea to get CMHC mortgage insurance when buying a house? Does it put a black mark on his credit record and effects him when buying another house later on? Also I heard, starting October everyone in Canada has to put a 20% when buying a house. Is this true?
Asked by gta129 - Thu Jul 17 11:38:13 2008 - - 2 Answers - 0 Comments

A. No, you don't have to put 20% down. But if you don't you need mortgage insurance - either from CMHC or another company to borrow from any major lender in Canada. There is a sliding percentage, highest with 5% down and reducing to nothing at 20% down. This is not a matter of his choice he is unlikely to get a mortgage without it. It has nothing to do with his credit or subsequent housing purchases. What happens in October is that CMHC will no long insure 40 year mortgages or ones with less than 5% down. The other mortgage insurers have followed suit and some major banks have already implemented the policy.

Asked by Matthew G - Fri Apr 13 09:31:25 2007 - - 7 Answers - 0 Comments

A. Foreclosures can have the advantage of a much lower purchase price that what the actual fair market value is, depending on how much financing was liened up on the house when it went into foreclosure. In todays market, most of the houses were maxed out at purchase up to 106% of the house value, so it stands to reason that the prices will not be much lower, as the bank needs to cover the loss. There are still some houses that have lower financed amounts on them, but it takes a lot of homework to find them. If you are trying to buy a foreclosure for investment purposes, then you have to be wary of Capital Gains Tax. If you don't occupy the property for a certain amount of time, then you get whacked with taxes on the profit. Other than… [cont.]
